Herpes sores typically manifest as one or more blisters on or near the mouth, genitalia or rectum. This is referred to as an "outbreak." When the blisters rupture, painful sores are left behind that may not heal for a week or longer. During the initial outbreak, flu-like symptoms (such as fever, body aches, or swollen glands) may also manifest.

What is Herpes?

Herpes results from infection with the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). It causes sores or blisters in or around the mouth or genitals alongside other symptoms.

The virus can remain dormant in the body after infection for years or even just a few days before becoming active. Additionally, it is subject to several reactivations each year. In the six cities of Pakistan, the total prevalence of HSV-2 infection was 3.4% (95% CI 2.8-4.3). According to city statistics, Karachi had the greatest prevalence at 6% (95% CI 4.1-8.8), followed by Lahore and Quetta at 4.3% (95% CI 2.7-6.7) and Faisalabad at 2.5% (95% CI 1.4-4.5).

Types of Herpes:

Herpes comes in type 1 and type 2 varieties: Type 1 results in mouth sores (oral infections). Type 2 results in sores near the genital regions. Genital herpes is the name of a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).
Herpes simplex type 1: Spread via oral secretions or cutaneous lesions. Kissing or sharing items like toothbrushes or eating utensils might spread it.
Herpes type 2:  When a person engages in sexual activity with a person who is HSV-2-infected in their genitalia.

Symptoms of Herpes :

Most people with oral herpes infection don't experience any symptoms, however they may experience uncomfortable blisters or open sores (ulcers) in or around the mouth (cold sores). Before sores develop, infected individuals may feel tingling, stinging or burning around their mouths. The frequency at which these symptoms repeat varies from person to person.

Asymptomatic or barely noticeable symptoms of genital herpes might occur. Genital herpes is characterised by one or more genital or anal blisters or ulcers when symptoms appear. In addition, fever, pains and swelling of the lymph nodes are frequent indicators of a new infection. Symptoms may return after an initial episode which can be quite severe. HSV-1-induced genital herpes normally does not return frequently. Recurring symptoms are typical with HSV-2. Recurrences, however, typically lessen over time and are typically less severe than the initial episode.
